I let out a little gasp when an email appeared in my inbox that said, “Congratulations!” I saw it during the weird hours of being a little too busy and a tiny bit sleepy (aka 2-3 p.m. on a weekday). After a quick double-take, I realized what it was: my artwork had been selected for an upcoming art show at a neighborhood cafe & bar. I couldn’t believe it.
Now, how did we get here?
In truth, it started with a little delusion. Some time in late July, as I was prepping for the Bushwick Maker’s Market, the universe (aka Instagram’s algorithm) hit me with a post for an open call for artists with Saturn Road. I had already started sharing more about my process and paintings independently, and I kept thinking about the opportunity.
Silly ol’ me said, there’s no way. Yet, why get in my own way when I can instead put in the effort to share what I have? If I get selected, incredible. If not, then no regrets.
From the heart, here’s what I submitted alongside my art:
Cobble Hill has a really special place in my heart. I moved to the neighborhood and lived in my first big girl apartment on my own...which also coincided with my painting journey. Seeing Saturn Road investing in the community and creating a space for artists and enthusiasts to come together just feels absolutely right to me. I’ve never displayed my work anywhere else (yet!), so it felt like a natural call to do it locally, in a special place that helped me heal and grow during a pivotal time of my life (literally during my Saturn return!!!!). Thank you for the opportunity and consideration.
I still stand by this, and I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this group show with 17 other incredible NYC-based women artists. And truly, sharing a piece that is a big part of my heart with others continues to make this little artist’s journey that much more meaningful.
About the artwork
Brooklyn night walks, 2022, 6” x 8”, Acrylic on canvas
When I first moved to Brooklyn, I had a few friends in the neighborhood. One thing we tried to do, instead of only meeting up for coffee or food, was to go on neighborhood walks with their dogs. The evenings would be so beautiful that I couldn’t help but snap photos of the sky, and of course, with my amazing friends. So while in the painting you only see the sky and a bit of the trees, know it’s a gentle reminder to slow down, look up, enjoy quality time with your friends, and make new memories together.
The first time I finished it, as the paint dried, I snapped a picture and posted my painting. I’m so glad I still have this image to remind me of the process.

The show is now open at Saturn Road, 276 Court St, in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Stop by for a coffee or stay late for a delicious cocktail. The show is on display in the back room past the bar. A Woman’s Work: The Art of Womanhood is on show until November 13, 2026.
